Kaitlyn and Benita met several weeks back and chatted about dreams we have for Westernaires. We talked about some challenges of 5 rows of chairs in a straight line, continuing to develop musically, safety and more. Out of these well wishes for Westernaires emerged a new seating design, and it’s ready for you to experience!
Why the Change?
Attached is a photo of the new design. From our conversation and observations over the last two seasons, these 7 goals emerged that birthed the seating design:
Sound: Help the director create a “chorale mosaic” to enhance vocal blending.
Sound: Enable everyone to hear other parts more clearly.
Sound: Group parts to make learning your section easier.
Eyes Up: Use mirrors to self-observe and refine what the audience and our director sees.
Safety: Increase flow options for getting in and out of seats. More points of exit.
Safety: Maintain the same number of seats but allow more space between the rows.
Welcoming: Clearly designate sections so every member feels included and has a seat. When you arrive at rehearsals you’ll find color-coded cards on chairs: Green: Bass/Baritone, Yellow: Tenor, Orange: Alto, Pink: Soprano. Within a section, you’ll also find descriptors on some cards such as “Descant or 2nd” on Soprano or “1st” on Alto. The cards are laminated so you can sit right on them and leave them on the chair at the conclusion of rehearsal. You are welcome to sit anywhere you’d like within your section’s designated area. There are the same number of chairs as last season. Some considerations:
Returning members: Sit anywhere within your section (color card), but please don’t move the cards.
LOA Returning members: We are thrilled you are back. Meet Benita in the wing (side by the stairs) and we’ll make sure you have a seat.
Considering a change in part? A few people have mentioned that their range is different than in years past. Now would be an EXCELLENT time to try out a new part. (Christmas roster: Sopranos & Altos at 27 each, Tenors at 10, and Bass/Baritone at 17)·
Mobility devices: For our valued members who use walking devices, where possible, consider sitting on the end of a row where we can make it easier for you to access your device. Your safety matters to all of us.
