Q. Can I Join?

A. We love that question! Membership into the Westernaires club can be applied for at anytime but entry into a upcoming concert needs to be in the first four weeks of rehearsals.

SCW Community policy requires that members must be a resident of Sun City West and hold a valid Rec Card. Our main stage shows in April and December are created in under 12 weeks of rehearsals.

Potential members must attend “Red Carpet Welcome” to quickly learn about the club, complete a placement audition, get to know leaders, pay dues and make new friends. Red Carpet Welcomes are hosted early in the new season. After week four, new members are encouraged to get involved focusing on non-singing club activities and/or smaller performance options.

Q. Are there dedicated chairs for everyone?

A. No. There are dedicated sections to ensure that all active singing members have a chair. Many of our members do not read music and have someone they prefer to sit by to learn their part. We encourage the buddy learning system. But we also must be flexible. Seats are not saved.

At the directors discretion, seats may be assigned to the chorus for the benefit of rehearsals and performances. At times the director will instruct the choir to sit completely mixed (not by your part). If you find yourself seated next to someone else in your section or a new part, enjoy meeting them and hearing a new voice.

Q. What if I need special accommodations?

A. Everyone member is welcomed. Performances are approximately two hours with a brief intermission. To ensure we are “performance” ready with a balanced blend, generally requests for special accommodations such as specific seating and above policy rehearsal absences are not allowed for performing members.

Performing members are expected to stand per club Policies and Procedures as unfortunately seated space is very limited.

The leadership will prioritize ADA designation, medically supervised issues, and long term members requiring standing exemption. Membership in Westernaires can be expressed behind the scenes as well. We will do our best to support non-preforming member accommodation who participate in Westernaires in non-singing capacities.

Q. I need a break. What do I do?

A. Active club members may place their membership in one of two temporary states or decide to resign.

1). On Leave of Absence (LOA) gives the member up to two main stage performances to not participate in rehearsals while maintaining their club members. A LOA is valid up to two consecutive seasonal performances. At the end of the LOA, the member must transfer to “singing” or “non-singing”. If you desire to return to “singing”, alert the membership chair of your desire to return.

2). Non-Singing Member status is for members who are important members of the club in non-singing roles such as backstage, house manager, advertising crew and other roles that are just as important as being on stage. This designation is for everyone who supports Westernaires and is invited to club functions but is not in a signing role.

Additionally, members may choose to resign from the club due to life realities or moving out of Sun City West. Please contact the membership chair to share your decision. They will update your section leader and the board.
